PowerHouse Arena, an incredible book store and event space that has hosted thousands of culture-starved New Yorkers, sustained massive damage due to Hurricane Sandy, including a 14 foot storm surge. Their CEO estimates the damage to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. Books, windows, displays, and more were irretrievably lost. They do not have flood insurance.
On November 17 from 12 to 8 PM, there will be a book fair to help the store at 37 Main Street. I hope to see you there.
In the meantime, you can join me by donating here. Think of it as buying back one of the ruined books so that somebody else can have a brand new one next time you’re in DUMBO.
